A car burglary suspect escaped after being detained by a citizen, leading police to find him and his accomplice after a search in Wonder Lake early Wednesday morning.

Donald Simon, 18, of Wonder Lake, and Michelle Buhrke-Conway, 19, of Wonder Lake, were arrested Wednesday morning around 4:30 a.m. and each charged with three counts of burglary to motor vehicle.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that a citizen briefly detained Simon after he saw Simon and Buhrke-Conway breaking into his vehicle. Simon escaped from the citizen and sheriff’s deputies were called.

A perimeter was setup and sheriff’s deputies located Simon and Buhrke-Conway a short time later.

“They were found to be in possession of items stolen from multiple vehicles in the area,” the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities are asking anyone that lives in the area of the 7500 block of Center Drive in Wonder Lake to check their vehicles for missing items. Anyone with missing items is asked to call the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 815-334-4750.

Simon remains held in the McHenry County Jail on a $30,000 bond. Buhrke-Conway has since been released on bail.
