A Zion man has been charged with murder for the shooting death of a North Chicago man in Zion on Wednesday.
Raymond Smith Jr., 29, of the 2300 block of Gabriel Avenue in Zion, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder on Friday.
Police were called to the 2500 block of Hebron Avenue in Zion around 12:10 a.m. on Wednesday for a shooting, according to Zion Police Chief Stephen Dumyahn.
Dumyahn said that police officers found Michael D. Williams, 33, of North Chicago, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported by the Zion Fire Department to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan where he was pronounced dead.
Preliminary reports were that Williams was shot in his chest and head. The shooter, later identified by police as Smith, fled the scene. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the murder charges on Friday.
Authorities said that Smith and Williams knew each other and the shooting was not random. Smith is scheduled to appear in bond court on Saturday.
The Zion Police Department was assisted by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.
