A Vernon Hills police officer shot and killed a man armed with a rifle during a domestic dispute call early Saturday morning.
The Vernon Hills Police Department was called to the 100 block of Marimac Lane in Vernon Hills around 1:38 a.m. Saturday for a call of a domestic dispute, according to Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli.
Covelli said that the first police officer to arrive at the home found a man, who was involved in the disturbance, inside of the garage armed with a rifle.
“During the encounter, the police officer engaged the man and fired at him,” Covelli said.
The man, whose identity is currently being withheld, was struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. The Lake County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene and an autopsy has been scheduled.
The Vernon Hills Police Department requested the Lake County Major Crime Task Force to conduct an independent investigation of the incident, according to standard protocol.
The police officer who was involved in the shooting was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and has since been treated and released.
