Police have arrested a 21-year-old man and 19-year-old woman in connection with car burglaries that occurred on Monday in Vernon Hills.

Vernon Hills Police Department spokesman Kim Christenson said that officers were called to the 200 block of Ashland Court around 12:30 a.m. Monday.

An alert resident called police after seeing a neighbor’s vehicle that had appeared to have been entered. The caller reported that two people were walking near it.

Police saw the two suspects, which matched their description, near Deerpath Drive and Abilene Lane. The two suspects were identified as Ivan X. Mendez, 21, of the 2300 block of North Vermilion Street in Danville, Illinois, and Oriana Oyesanya, 19, of the 100 block of East Avenue in La Grange, Illinois.

Christenson said that the pair allegedly burglarized a vehicle in the 200 block of Ashland Court and in the 200 block of Abilene Lane. Both vehicles had been unlocked.

Mendez and Oyesanya were charged with misdemeanor theft and felony burglary to auto. A judge set Mendez’s bond at $40,000, and Oyesanya’s bond at $5,000.

Mendez remains in the Lake County Jail while Oyesanya was released after posting bail.

“This incident underscores the importance of calling 911 immediately when seeing someone or something suspicious. It also serves as a reminder to keep your vehicle locked, regardless of where it is parked,” Vernon Hills Chief of Police Patrick Kreis said.
