A man in his 40s died early Friday morning after being hit by a vehicle that fled the scene in downtown Waukegan, police said.
Waukegan Chief of Police Wayne Walles said that officers and paramedics were called to a report of a man lying in the roadway near Washington Street and Genesee Street in Waukegan around 5:30 a.m. Friday.
Police found a Waukegan man in his 40s down in the road. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Waukegan Police Department Criminal Investigations Division said that the man was struck by a vehicle which fled the scene. No further information was released about the suspect or if police have any leads.
Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that an autopsy is being scheduled. The man’s identity is being withheld pending notification to his family.
