Two people were injured after a drunk driver slammed into the rear of two McHenry police cars that were investigating a car accident on Route 120 Sunday morning, authorities said.

McHenry Police Department Deputy Chief Thomas Walsh said that two police cars were investigating a car accident in the 5200 block of Route 120 in McHenry around 7:26 a.m. Sunday when a Toyota Matrix driving eastbound struck one of the police cars.

The impact of the crash caused a second police car, which was parked at the scene, to be involved. The police car that was initially struck by the Toyota was unoccupied at the time of the collision, Walsh said.

The second police car involved was occupied by a citizen who was involved in the traffic crash that was being investigated by the officers. The citizen was not injured.

There were four people in the Toyota and two of them were transported by ambulance to Northwestern McHenry Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The roadway was closed for over an hour while police investigated the crash and removed the damaged cars from the scene.

The driver of the Toyota, Magdalena E. Wojtach, 22, of the 20 block of Elm Avenue in Fox Lake, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of open alcohol in a vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, failure to yield to a stopped emergency vehicle and no valid insurance.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the McHenry Police Department at 815-363-2200.
