Francisco Suarez Lopez, 67, of Round Lake Beach, died Monday evening after being hit by a car while trying to cross the street in Round Lake Beach, the coroner said.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department and the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District were called Monday at 6:52 p.m. to Route 83 and Monaville Road.

Emergency crews found Lopez unresponsive after being struck by a 2008 Ford Taurus. He was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Round Lake Beach Police Deputy Chief Michael Scott said that Lopez was walking his bicycle eastbound Route 83 crossing at Monaville Road when a southbound Ford Taurus, which was driven by a 26-year-old Lindenhurst woman, struck him.

A 27-year-old Wheeling woman driving an Infiniti struck debris in the northbound lanes right after the original crash occurred, Scott said. She pulled over and was not injured.

Lopez was carrying grocery bags and pushing his bicycle across the street when he was struck, Scott added.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper, who identified Lopez on Wednesday, confirmed that he died from multiple traumatic injuries caused by blunt force trauma consistent with being hit by a car.

“Mr. Suarez Lopez’s family has been notified and our deepest condolences go out to them. This is truly an awful tragedy,” Dr. Cooper said. Routine toxicology testing is pending.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT), Round Lake Beach Police Department and Lake County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the crash.
