A 56-year-old man is dead after being hit by an SUV while trying to cross the road in Round Lake Beach Tuesday evening, police said.

The Round Lake Beach Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District was called at 7:38 p.m. on Tuesday to Fairfield Road and Hillside Drive for a bicyclist struck by a vehicle.

Police officers found a 56-year-old man who had been struck by a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV. The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that the 56-year-old man was a Round Lake Beach resident.

Authorities said that the man was riding his bicycle westbound crossing Fairfield Road at Hillside Drive when he was struck by the Honda Pilot which was driving southbound on Fairfield Road.

The driver of the SUV, a 41-year-old man from Lake Villa, stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to assist the Round Lake Beach Police Department with the investigation.
