A 53-year-old man fighting for his life died in the hospital on Wednesday after he was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday in Lake in the Hills.
The Algonquin Police Department and Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District were called at 6:12 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a pedestrian struck by a car near Algonquin Road and Crystal Lake Road in Lake in the Hills.
Police found David Popovich, 53, of Lake in the Hills with severe injuries. Popovich was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medical Huntley Hospital in critical condition. He died on Wednesday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
The Algonquin Police Department said that the man was crossing the intersection when a westbound vehicle, driven by a 50-year-old Algonquin woman, struck him. The woman was not impaired and also not injured, police added.
Algonquin Road was shutdown in both directions for three and a half hours while police investigators worked at the scene.
An autopsy has not been performed yet by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. A GoFundMe, which has raised over $13,000 in less than 24 hours, was started by the man’s daughter to help with funeral costs.
“We know our dad has touched many lives weather it be from his funny antics or his passionate conversations about cars and airplanes he was always the brightest smile in the room,” Allison Popovich said.
The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team and the Algonquin Police Department. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call police at 847-658-4531.
