A homicide investigation is underway after police say a woman stabbed her husband to death at their Waukegan home, then stabbed herself and called 911 Tuesday morning.

The Waukegan Police Department was called at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 4400 block of Swallowtail Drive, which is on the city’s southwest side off of O’Plaine Road.

Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles said that a 47-year-old woman called 911 and said she stabbed her 38-year-old husband. Police responded and observed the woman trying to flee the scene in her car.

Police officers pursued the woman eastbound on Route 120 before the car came to a stop at Knight Avenue and Route 120 in Park City. She was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries after she stabbed herself, Walles said.

At the couple’s home, police found the husband stabbed to death. He was pronounced dead by paramedics. Police are withholding the identities of both of the subjects until proper notification is made to family members.

An autopsy on the 38-year-old man has been scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office for tomorrow. Police have not released any further information yet about the motive or if charges are pending against the woman.
