A man whose credit card was declined pulled a gun on a gas station clerk in Lake Bluff and stole cigarettes early Wednesday morning, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office was called at 4 a.m. Wednesday to the Shell gas station, 28787 Waukegan Road in Lake Bluff, for an armed robbery.

The clerk told sheriff’s deputies that 45 minutes prior, a man entered the gas station and tried buying cigarettes and alcohol, Lake County Sheriff Sgt. Christopher Covelli said. The man handed the clerk a credit card, which ended up getting declined.

“The man threatened the clerk, reached toward his waistband, displayed a firearm, and told the clerk to give him the cigarettes,” Covelli said. The suspect took the cigarettes and fled the scene.

He is described as a male black in his 20s, wearing a black hat, black hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
