A North Chicago man, who is a documented gang member, was captured on Tuesday by U.S. Marshals and local police on a warrant for aggravated battery of a pregnant woman.
Giovanni M. Smith, 29, of the 400 block of 10th Street in North Chicago, was wanted on an arrest warrant for aggravated battery of a pregnant woman and two counts of domestic battery, which was issued by the North Chicago Police Department in September.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Warrants Team and U.S. Marshals apprehended Smith at a residence in the 1800 block of Hebron Avenue in Zion on Tuesday. He was arrested without incident and transported to the Lake County Jail.
Lake County Sheriff spokesman Christopher Covelli said that the North Chicago Police Department is also investigating an incident on December 5 where Smith is suspected of fleeing from police officers in a car near Route 41 and Route 137.
Smith remains held on a $40,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Friday.
