The unborn baby of a pregnant woman shot in the head Tuesday afternoon in Round Lake died overnight in the hospital, and the woman remains in critical condition, police said.

The Round Lake Police Department and the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District was called around 2 p.m. Tuesday to a home in the 600 block of West Nippersink Road for a report of a shooting.

Police found a pregnant woman, who is in her 20s, with a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics transported her to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The woman’s unborn baby died overnight in the hospital and the woman remains in critical condition. An autopsy has been scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Christopher Covelli said that a person of interest was taken into custody at the scene and remains held in custody as of Wednesday morning.

Covelli said that there is no threat to the community and everyone at the scene was “accounted for” and interviewed by detectives.

Round Lake Village Elementary School, located at 880 West Nippersink Road, and Round Lake Early Education Center, located 882 West Nippersink Road, were both put on lockdown due to the proximity of the shooting. The lockdown lasted 20 minutes.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force and the Round Lake Police Department continue to investigate.
