An 18-year-old died Wednesday evening after being shot in the parking lot of an apartment building in Zion, police said.

The Zion Police Department was called at 4:31 p.m. Wednesday for several shots fired in the 1500 block of Lorelei Avenue in Zion.

Zion Police Chief Steve Dumyahn said that police officers arrived and found an 18-year-old lying in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. Zion Fire-Rescue was called and CPR was started on the teen.

He was transported by ambulance to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan where he later died, Dumyahn said. The Lake County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the boy.

During the shooting, stray gunfire went through a family’s apartment, narrowly missing the occupants inside. Witnesses said there were between five and eight shots fired during the shooting.

Police have not yet released any information about the suspect or suspects involved.

The homicide remains under investigation by the Zion Police Department and Lake County Major Crime Task Force. Anyone with information is asked to call the Zion Police Department at 847-662-2222.

  1. It used to be settled with a fist fight and everyone lived. Now everybody has a weapon and use them for any infraction and people die. Not sure what happened in this instance however it’s tragic this teen had to die. Somebody knows something and let’s get this killer behind bars.
