Daniel Stein, 15, of Vernon Hills, was found dead Wednesday along the railroad tracks in Vernon Hills. He died from blunt force trauma injuries, the Lake County Coroner’s Office said.

The Vernon Hills Police Department said that Stein was found around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday on the west side of the train tracks near Basswood Drive and Sullivan Drive by Westwood Park.

Vernon Hills Police spokesman Kim Christenson said that a Canadian National Railway employee on a passing train observed the body alongside the tracks. Christenson said that police officers and paramedics confirmed Stein was deceased at the scene.

An autopsy performed by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on Friday showed that Stein died from injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Toxicology testing is pending.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper said that the cause of death is still under investigation and it is unknown how exactly the boy died. “We are waiting to see camera footage from the railway,” Cooper said when asked if it was possible Stein was struck by a train.

“The incident remains under investigation. However, currently there is no indication that foul play was involved,” Christenson said.

The death remains under investigation by the Vernon Hills Police Department, Canadian National Railway Police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
