A 15-year-old boy was found dead on Wednesday along the railroad tracks in Vernon Hills after a railroad employee spotted the body, police said.

The Vernon Hills Police Department said that the body was discovered around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday on the west side of the train tracks near Basswood Drive and Sullivan Drive by Westwood Park.

Vernon Hills Police spokesman Kim Christenson said that the employee was on a passing train when they observed the body alongside the tracks. Christenson said that police officers and paramedics confirmed the 15-year-old boy, who is from Vernon Hills, was deceased at the scene.

His identity has not yet been publicly released. An autopsy has been scheduled with the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

“The incident remains under investigation. However, currently there is no indication that foul play was involved,” Christenson said.

The Vernon Hills Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Metra Police Department, Canadian National Railway Police Department, the Lake County Coroner’s Office Office and the Countryside Fire Protection District.

The death remains under investigation by the Vernon Hills Police Department and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
