A 33-year-old Marengo man has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13, prosecutors said.

Mario Martinez-Zarate, 33, of Marengo, accepted a plea deal on Wednesday with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. Martinez-Zarate pleaded guilty to predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Judge Robert Wilbrandt issued the 14 year sentenced, and Martinez-Zarate is required to serve 85 percent of it under the Truth and Sentencing Guidelines.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office said that the victim was under 13 years old and it occurred between December 1, 2017, and January 5, 2018. Martinez-Zarate will be required to register as a lifetime sex offender after he is released from the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Mary Ann Scholl and Sharyl Eisenstein and investigated by Detective Ed Maldonado of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
