A 27-year-old man has been charged after police said that he threatened officers with a weapon, leading to a six-hour standoff with SWAT on Friday in Lake in the Hills.
Garrett C. Kowalczyk, 27, of the 100 block of Harvest Gate in Lake in the Hills, was charged with threatening a public official, aggravated assault, two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer and four counts of criminal damage to property.
Police were called to Kowalczyk’s residence on Friday around 4:07 p.m. for a report of an intoxicated subject. Officers made contact with Kowalczyk and he allegedly threatened them with a weapon, which was not displayed, before retreating into the residence, the Lake in the Hills Police Department said.
Officers secured the residence and requested the McHenry County SWAT. Nearby residents were asked to avoid the area as a safety precaution during the standoff. Kowalczyk was taken into custody around 10 p.m., almost six hours later.
A search of the home found that no one else was inside and no guns were located. Kowalczyk was transported to the McHenry County Jail.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department was assisted at the scene by officers from Algonquin, Carpentersville, Cary, Crystal Lake, Huntley and the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.
Court records relating to Kowalczyk’s case were not available as of Monday evening.
