A 21-year-old Waukegan man is dead and a child and woman were injured in a crash on Peterson Road in Libertyville Saturday morning, the sheriff’s office said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Libertyville Fire Department were called to Peterson Road near Route 137 around 11 a.m. Saturday for a vehicle crash.

Lake County Sheriff Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a 2013 Mazda 6, driven by a 21-year-old Waukegan man, was traveling westbound on Peterson Road just west of Route 137.

“For an unknown reason, the Mazda 6 crossed the concrete grass median and entered the eastbound lanes of traffic. The Mazda was struck by an eastbound 2011 Toyota Sienna, driven by a 45-year-old woman of Johnsburg,” Covelli said.

The driver of the Mazda was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota and an 8-year-old passenger were also transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has scheduled an autopsy on the 21-year-old man for Monday. The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
