Police are investigating a road rage incident in Richmond after a video was posted on social media Tuesday showing a driver pointing a gun at a man and then speeding away.

The incident happened around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday in the northbound lanes of Route 12 just north of Broadway Road in Richmond.

Bart Surroz, of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, posted the video on Facebook, which shows Surroz getting out of his car and walking up to a red Jeep Wrangler.

The driver, identified as Brian Schimian, of Richmond, is seen sitting in his car and pointing his concealed carry gun at Surroz. Schimian yells at Surroz to, “Get in your car.”

Schimian is seen speeding away in his Jeep from the scene. Schimian also posted video on Facebook Tuesday evening from his Jeep’s dashcam.

“All I did was get out of my car because he kept beeping at a dead stop. I thought I hit something or he was trying to alert me that I’m dragging something behind my car. I had no idea he was upset and angry with me,” Surroz said.

“I don’t even know why! He was just behind me holding on the horn so I got out in dead stop traffic trying to figure out what the heck is going on,” he added.

Richmond police were called but Surroz said that they did not arrest Schimian.

“They said because he has a concealed carry permit he was well within his rights to put the gun in my face because he told the cops that he was terrified of his life,” Surroz said.

Police did not release any further information to Lake and McHenry County Scanner about the incident but said that more information is expected to be released Wednesday evening.

  1. Stupid to get out of your car and go at somebody.he’s lying. If he thought the guy was beeping at him because he may be hit or drag something why didn’t he get out of his car and go look at the back of his vehicle or under it why did he go straight toward the jeep with the cell phone? He’s lying he knew he intended to walk up and talk trash that dude until he saw that gun

    1. In his first FB post, he didn’t mention that he thought the guy was honking because he may have hit/dragging something. That comment came out AFTER the police released him. He exited his car within TWO seconds of stopping, how much could the guy have honked. Further, people said he flew up to him, from the dash cam I watched he didn’t and was a distance away. Then people are saying he approached him because he had his gun pointed at him through his windshield. What person would continue to approach someone that was pointing a gun at them? Not a single person I know. All these people saying they witnessed it, was horrified………….. Not ONE 911 call from anyone but the other guy. If ALL these witnesses saw that the jeep guy was a threat, called 911, maybe the guy would have been taken into custody.

    2. If someone keeps honking at you while youre stopped in traffic, its pretty fair to assume someone wants your attention. Are you stupid?

  2. From what I see, there is nobody in front of them. The front driver was blocking traffic and thought he would play pompous tough guy and get out of his car and point a cell phone. He’s lucky it was day time and the driver of the jeep didn’t think that cell phone was a gun.
Grow up tough guy before someone gets killed or goes to jail.

  3. Suspicious. Gun owner has the right to protect himself. But the horn-honking is a bit above. Still, even is he’s the instigator, he has that right. I travel through Richmond 9-10 time a week. US 12 is a wreck. Deal with it. Honking the horn – unless some idiot doesn’t move at a Green Light at 12/173 is ridiculous. You’re not going anywhere faster. It is life.

  4. There is a dashcam video that shows the other side. I’m horrified. He hit 57 mph before he even got downtown. He even blew the stop sign by the doctor’ office…. I’m shocked on how reckless he was before that situation even occurred especially since he is suppose to be a ‘public servant…In the dash-cam video that was posted this guy broke numerous laws. He didn’t make a complete stop at the stop sign, then he was doing 50 in a 35 mph zone, then he was tailgating, then passed in a no passing zone nearly hitting the back end of one car and nearly hitting another head on, and lastly began tailgating another vehicle… He is an absolute menace!!!!

    1. I am glad you have brought clarity to these comments. I noticed the same thing you did regarding the driving 57 mph in a 35 and his wreckless driving. He was obviously angry the car in front of him was driving the posted speed limit. Horn or no horn, pointing a gun at an unarmed person is absolutely ridiculous. Richmond police need to see his video as well. Multiple moving violations.

    1. What happened before the jeep took off after the mini? I’ve seen that mini drive like an asshat every day. Probably cut off the jeep and the jeep was trying to catch up to get plates. Always 2 sides. Also, never get out of your vehicle. Stupid move. Smart phones are gonna weed out the stupid people.

  5. According to the dash cam footage from the red Jeep, it looks like he was traveling well over the speed limit. The video shows the speed in the lower right hand corner and it appears as though he was traveling over 50mph in a 35mph zone. Not to mention, he crossed the center line as well. Sure seems like he was in a hurry and the Mini Cooper was just in his way. At no time was his life threatened and charges should be made on the driver of the red Jeep.

  6. Arrest that MF! There was no threat and he initiated the situation! The driver of the Mini had full right to draw and kill the jeep owner for threatening him! I have ccw and train regularly. If he truly feared for his life he’s a fn pussy and should never be allowed to carry a gun! He gives gun owners and true 2nd ammendment patriots a bad name! I am absolutely appalled!

    1. I found out from the YouTube section that Jeep man is a cop.

Even in stand your ground states people get arrested for pulling a gun after being punched, this retard is driving double the speed limit and honking at upcoming traffic.

The guy who got out of his car was probably equally confused and pissed, he didn’t seem to look at his bumper, but Jeep-copper was not in the right here and he wouldn’t have the support in these comments and he would have been arrested without that badge.

  7. Guy in the red Jeep is an idiot! He was definitely going 20mph+ and was flying through there. Seems like he has an anger issue. He should be charged with reckless driving and have his license pulled. There’s enough stupid behavior in NE Illinois and not much enforcement of traffic laws. 95% of the time you can get away with breaking traffic laws. Like speeding.

  8. Hope the Richmond Fire Chief and Board gets to see how their employee acts in public…wont be a thing they could do about it, not with those iron clad “cant fire me for nothing” Union Contracts Public Sector Employees cover themselves with. Bet he makes well over 6 figures, and maybe put out 3 fires in 20 years. Privatize the Fire Dept…tired of being held hostage by these thieves. Same trained “ambulance drivers” as Private Paramedics are held to the same life saving duties as Public Sector ones making probably 4 or 5 times the salary—its a rip off folks. And too many of them, like this Red Jeep (they all buy Red vehicles) running around town and the County acting all privileged and in with his cop buddies, city and County. Absolute worst. I’ve seen other vehicles with the FF Licence plate drive recklessly and road rage through McHenry County—enough of the “hands off” by the cops with these nutjobs. Albeit, very wealthy nutjobs at our expense. End of rant. Now drive safely Fireman. Guaranteed people will see him driving around town and egg him on just for kicks , honk and tailgate himand see if he gets set off again…way to go numb scull.

    1. So I take it you hate firefighters. The same people that would die trying to save you or your family. One asshole doesn’t make a whole group bad. ust out of curiosity, what do you do for a living. Oh, by the way, very very few first responders make 6 digits. They don’t do the job for the money. They do it because they want to help. This comes at your stupid ass from a retired firefighter of well over 20 years. That makes you the asshat!

  10. Thank God the guy doesn’t drive in the city… he’d never get anywhere if he kept getting out of his car when people are honking at him

  11. Okay, The guy in the red jeep crosses over the double yellow line at least three times, gets up to 56 or 58 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone passing the middle school, sounds his horn for not an emergency, apparently no front license plate and then passes the other car illegally almost hitting another car. Traffic violations alone from his own camera and the other one, he has 7 easy to write tickets. I saw no threat to him. The guy approached him with a cell phone. I don’t care what the guy did in the other car prior to this. The guy in the jeep is not a police officer and absolutely can not take the law into his own hands. Concealed carry does not give him a right to brandish it. I do believe the other driver was alarmed because the jeep came up on him so fast and got on his horn. Even if the guy in the grey car was acting stupid driving, the guy in the red jeep is not a law enforcement officer and has no right to break any traffic laws. He cannot make traffic stops. This is one of my biggest fears about concealed carry. He couldn’t control his temper in this situation and used his gun to threaten an unarmed person. If he had shot him he would be in jail right now. Even law enforcement would not pull there handgun out when the other guy is clearly not armed. The guy in the jeep should have phoned in whatever he was concerned about to the police. I would have charged him if I was investigating this.

  12. If you are an insecure douchebag that pulls a gun out in traffic, you are going to get shot in the face one day. What kind of man drives a 4 door jeep anyways?

  13. The guy in the Jeep blew through 2 stop signs, was doing 62 MPH in a school zone as he flies past the Jr. High while well across the double yellow center line. There are at least 4 cars in front of the Mini when it came to a stop and the guy in the Jeep is laying on the horn. So the guy in front gets out to see what’s wrong and he gets a gun in his face. People defending the Jeep driver are just as nuts as he is.

  14. First I’d like to point out the guy with the gun was flying down route 12. his dash cam is proof of that. its a 30 mph zone he was doing 62 at one point. he came up on the guy in from of him extremely fast and then started honking the horn… that was uncalled for. as for when the guy pulled out the gun i dont know but it seems to me that the guy in the jeep had his gun out even before the guy in from of him got out of the car. What an asshole. the other guy may have been lying or something happened before the video started to enrage the guy in the jeep and he was attempting to catch up and scare the idiot. he approached the jeep even with a gun pointed at him why? most normal people would not do that. He fled the scene by almost hitting an oncoming car with no concern for anyone but himself. they both are at fault.

  15. I appreciate he shared his dash cam video even though it only implicated him. From what I see the guy in the Mini Cooper did stop and question what was going on, I’d also assume something is wrong if someone is blasting their horn at me.

  16. I found out from the YouTube section that Jeep man is a cop.

  17. By the way ! That is also a school zone he was doing 50 in ! Look at the building on the right as he is crossing lanes!

  18. Without a legitimate threat the driver of the jeep was not within his rights to brandish his weapon… He definitely broke the law!
