A 23-year-old Zion man was killed and a 56-year-old Gurnee man suffered minor injuries after a head-on crash in unincorporated McHenry early Saturday morning.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Lakemoor Police Department and McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 12:09 a.m. Saturday to a two-vehicle crash in the 300 block of West Bay Road, near Lauderdale Court, in unincorporated McHenry.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that a 2004 Nissan Sentra, driven by a 23-year-old Zion man, was traveling eastbound on Bay Road while a 2017 Toyota Sienna, driven by a 56-year-old Gurnee man, was traveling westbound on Bay Road.

The Nissan, for unknown reasons, entered the westbound lane of traffic and struck the Toyota head-on, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said.

The driver of the Nissan was extricated by firefighters and flown to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the Toyota was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with minor injuries.

Both men were sole occupants in their vehicles.

Airbags deployed in both cars and the driver of the Toyota was wearing his seatbelt, sheriff’s officials said. It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor in the crash.
