A 13-year-old boy riding his bicycle on Route 59 near North Barrington was struck and seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver early Saturday morning, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the crash is believed to have occurred between 3 a.m. and 3:50 a.m. Saturday on Route 59 south of Route 22.

The 13-year-old boy was riding his bicycle when he was struck by an unknown vehicle, Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said. An unknown person then transported the injured boy to his home in the 1100 block of Glencrest Drive in Inverness.

The boy’s parents called 911 after waking up and finding the boy seriously injured, Covelli said. He was transported by ambulance to St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates where he was then transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago due to the extent of his injuries.

Evidence of the hit-and-run crash was recovered at the scene. The boy is currently in critical but stable condition, Covelli said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
