Dylan E. Sanchez, 18, died after getting shot in the face at a home near Richmond last week and a 47-year-old man has been charged in connection with the murder, the coroner and police said.

John M. Maki Jr., 47, of unincorporated Richmond, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He is being held on a $5 million bond in the McHenry County Jail and has been appointed a public defender, court records show.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday to assist the fire department with a call in the 11100 block of Serenity Path, which is in a subdivision that is east of Richmond and north of Spring Grove.

Sheriff’s deputies found Maki Jr. and a deceased man inside the home. An investigation was launched and the McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team was requested.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office officially identified Dylan E. Sanchez, 18, of Harvard, as the victim. An autopsy performed on Sanchez showed that he died from a gunshot wound to the face.

The manner of death was ruled a homicide, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office added.

Maki Jr. was taken into custody and charged, the sheriff’s office said. The Spring Grove Police Department, Illinois State Police, Spring Grove Fire Protection District and Richmond Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.

Maki Jr. is scheduled to appear in court on May 31. The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry County Major Investigation Assistance Team and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
