A person and dog escaped a house fire without injuries near unincorporated Lake Villa Monday morning, Gurnee fire officials said.
The Gurnee Fire Department responded around 9:37 a.m. to the 36900 block of North Deer Trail Drive in unincorporated Lake Villa, which is west of Gurnee.
Firefighters arrived and found smoke and fire showing from the side of a two-story home. Initial reports indicated that a person and a dog were still in the house but they both were able to escape the home before firefighters arrived.
The fire was under control around 40 minutes after crews arrived. Gurnee and Newport fire investigators were called to the scene. They believe discarded ashes in a grill from the day before ignited the fire, which started on the outside of the home.
No injuries were reported, fire officials said.
The Newport Fire Protection District assisted Gurnee firefighters at the scene. Libertyville, Zion, Mundelein and Lake Villa firefighters covered Gurnee fire stations during the incident.
