Andrew J. Colwell, 36, of Fox Lake.

A Fox Lake man has been charged after Round Lake Heights police say he struck a 63-year-old woman with his vehicle and fled the scene, causing serious injuries to her.

Andrew J. Colwell, 36, of the 8300 block of Reva Bay Lane in Fox Lake, was arrested after the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charge of failure to report an accident involving personal injury, a Class 4 felony.

The Round Lake Heights Police Department and Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded at 8:36 p.m. May 18 to a call of a hit-and-run crash at Rollins Road and Lotus Drive.

Police said that a 63-year-old woman was crossing Rollins Road in the southbound lane when she was struck by a vehicle turning right from Lotus Drive onto westbound Rollins Road.

The vehicle backed up and then fled the scene without rendering aid, police officials said. The victim sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

Several witnesses gave their accounts of the incident, including vehicle and driver descriptions, to police, which led them to Colwell.

“Officers of the Round Lake Heights Police Department worked vigilantly to locate and examine video sources from businesses in the area as well as video from residential sources within the neighborhoods to identify the offending vehicle prior to impact, which led to the driver,” the Round Lake Heights Police Department said in a statement.

Police arrested Colwell last Thursday. He posted $5,000 bail, which was 10 percent of his $50,000 bond, and was released from the Lake County Jail.

“The Round Lake Heights Police Department extends our gratitude to all those who provided tips and information to crimetip@rlhpd.org or that helped spread the word through various social media posts,” police said.
