A 19-year-old was arrested after officers clocked the teen driving 120 miles per hour in a construction zone in Lake Forest, just hours after he had been stopped by Illinois State Police for speeding.
Axel Santiago-Zepeda, 19, of the 300 block of Ferndale Drive in Round Lake Beach, was charged with aggravated speeding in a construction zone, reckless driving and child endangerment.
The Lake Forest Police Department was conducting traffic monitoring in the construction zone on Route 41 around 3:15 a.m. June 8 when they observed a white and black BMW speeding in the 45 mph zone.
A police officer was able to get a radar speed of 120 mph, which was 75 miles per hour more than the posted speed limit. The vehicle fled the area as police tried stopping it.
The BMW was later located by authorities and Santiago-Zepeda was identified as the driver, the Lake Forest Police Department said. Santiago-Zepeda also had a 16-year-old in the passenger seat of the car.
Lake Forest police learned that Illinois State Police stopped Santiago-Zepeda three hours prior for speeding. Santiago-Zepeda was arrested and processed at the Lake Forest Police Department.
He was released after posting 10 percent of his $2,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on July 2.
