Two juveniles were taken into custody early Wednesday morning after a running car was stolen from the driveway of a Round Lake Park home, police said.

The Round Lake Park Police Department was called around 3 a.m. Wednesday to the 100 block of Forest Glenn Drive for a report of a stolen 2005 Ford Taurus.

Round Lake Park Police Chief George Filenko said that 30 minutes after the original report, police were informed that an area resident, who had been looking for her 14-year-old son, had seen him and five other subjects in a car at the Shell gas station at Route 45 and Route 120 in Grayslake.

The mother tried to grab her son but he fled with the other subjects in a vehicle. The mother then saw her son and the same juveniles walking on foot in the 500 block of Ravine Drive in Round Lake Park 30 minutes later, Filenko said.

Round Lake police officers, who were assisting Round Lake Park police officers, located the stolen 2005 Ford Taurus at Hillcrest Terrace and Knollwood Drive in Round Lake Park a short time later.

Two juveniles were taken into custody and charges are pending. Investigators are working to identify the additional subjects involved.

“This was a crime of opportunity. The owner of the vehicle had left the keys in the ignition. Fortunately there were no injuries, although the vehicle was observed driving recklessly,” Filenko said.
