A road construction flagger was struck and killed early Tuesday morning by a dump truck at a construction site on Route 41 in Lake Forest, authorities said.

The Lake Forest Police Department, Highland Park Police Department and Lake Forest Fire Department responded just after midnight Tuesday to Route 41 and Old Elm Road for a construction accident.

A construction worker, who was reportedly working as a flagger, was struck by a dump truck in the southbound lanes of Route 41 south of Old Elm Road.

Police said that the worker was struck by the truck as it was backing up during road construction operations. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said.

The southbound lanes of Route 41 at Old Elm Road were closed as the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team investigated the incident overnight.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and has scheduled an autopsy on the victim, whose identity will be released after their family has been notified, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake Forest Police Department and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT).
