A 35-year-old kayaker was found dead floating face down in Crystal Lake near Lakewood Thursday afternoon, police and the coroner’s office said.

The Lakewood Police Department and Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 12:31 p.m. Thursday to a report of a possible drowning victim in the lake near the 1300 block of South Shore Drive, which is on the south end of Crystal Lake.

Emergency responders found a 35-year-old man face down in the water just off the shoreline, Lakewood police and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office said.

Paramedics attempted lifesaving efforts and transported the man to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Northwest Herald reported the man had been kayaking just before he was found in the water, about five feet from the shore.

The McHenry County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy on Saturday. The name of the man is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
