A 14-year-old boy riding his bicycle was hospitalized after being struck by a McHenry County Sheriff’s Office vehicle in Crystal Lake on Saturday.

The Crystal Lake Police Department and the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded around 3:40 p.m. Saturday to Route 176 and Route 31 in Crystal Lake for a bicyclist struck by a police car.

Crystal Lake Police Sgt. Mike Bennett said that a McHenry County sheriff’s deputy was driving eastbound on Route 176 when a 14-year-old boy riding a bicycle tried crossing the road.

The sheriff’s deputy struck the boy, who was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Bennett said.

There is no crosswalk where the boy tried crossing the road, Bennett said.

Eastbound Route 176 was shut down while Crystal Lake police accident investigators worked the scene. No citations have been issued and authorities have not released additional information because the investigation is still ongoing, Bennett said.
