A 40-year-old man has been charged after authorities say he fled from police officers in a stolen vehicle before crashing into a car and a building in Marengo early Tuesday morning.

Maxwell E. Johnson, 40, of the 100 block of Willow Road in Willow Springs, was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated fleeing to elude, reckless driving, speeding 26-34 mph over and driving without a valid driver’s license. He was also cited for disregarding a traffic control device and operating an uninsured vehicle.

The Marengo Police Department said that officers attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding around 2:55 a.m. Tuesday. The vehicle, driven by Johnson, fled from police officers and ran a red light at Route 23 and Route 20.

The vehicle Johnson was driving struck another car after running the light and ended up coming to a rest against a building, causing minor damage to the structure.

Everyone involved in the crash suffered minor injuries and were evaluated by paramedics. No one was transported to the hospital, police said. The vehicle Johnson was driving had recently been stolen, police added.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Marengo Fire Protection District and Marengo Rescue Squad assisted the Marengo Police Department during the incident.

Johnson was transported to the McHenry County Jail, where he remains held on a $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
