A 28-year-old man was killed and a 41-year-old man was seriously injured after the Jaguar they were in went off the road and struck a tree in Gurnee early Friday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 1:30 a.m. Friday to Route 41 north of Kilbourne Road.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that the Jaguar was traveling northbound on Route 41 when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it went off the roadway, striking a tree.

Police found a 2001 Jaguar X  in the trees east of the roadway with heavy damage. The driver, a 41-year-old Waukegan man, and the passenger, a 28-year-old Beach Park man, were both trapped in the vehicle.

The passenger sustained significant injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene, Covelli said. The driver was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious injuries.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and an autopsy for the passenger has been scheduled for Monday.

“Crash investigators will work to determine if speed and/or intoxicating substances were a contributing factor of the crash,” Covelli said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
