A 29-year-old man died and a 32-year-old man was seriously injured after a Mercedes Benz SUV went off the road, struck two trees and rolled over near Harvard Sunday evening.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry County Conservation Police Department and Harvard Fire Protection District responded around 7:25 p.m. Sunday to the 21000 block of Oak Grove Road in unincorporated Harvard.

A 2015 Mercedes Benz GL 450 was traveling eastbound on Oak Grove Road west of Route 14 when it crossed over the westbound lane and drove off the north side of the roadway, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office.

The Mercedes struck two trees and rolled onto its side. The passenger of the Mercedes, a 29-year-old Niles man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 32-year-old Niles man, was extricated from the vehicle by firefighters and flown by a Mercyhealth REACT medical helicopter to Javon Bea Hospital – Riverside in Rockford with serious injuries.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that airbags deployed in the vehicle and alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
