A man wanted for stealing cash, jewelry and a TV from a home was taken into custody following a several hour-long standoff with police and a SWAT team in Lake in the Hills on Thursday.
Jesus Valdez, 20, of the 400 block of Cedar Street in Lake in the Hills, was charged with residential burglary, criminal damage to property, possession of stolen property and resisting a peace officer.
Valdez is accused of burglarizing a home in the 300 block of Hiawatha Drive in Lake in the Hills on Wednesday. Police said that he took $900 in cash, a television and miscellaneous jewelry during the burglary.
The Lake in the Hills Police Department responded around 11:38 a.m. Thursday to the 400 block of Cedar Street to arrest Valdez at his residence.
When officers made contact with the man, he retreated into his residence, Lake in the Hills Police Department Communications Coordinator Ashley Eccles said.
“Officers secured the residence and requested the assistance of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office multi-jurisdictional SWAT team,” Eccles said.
More than five hours later, Valdez exited the home under police direction and surrendered without further incident. No one else was inside the residence. Valdez was arrested and transported to the McHenry County Jail.
“The Lake in the Hills Police Department appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents that were asked to avoid the immediate area as a safety precaution,” the department said.
