A 13-year-old Round Lake Beach girl and a 34-year-old Chicago man were killed after their car crashed into a condominium building at a high rate of speed in Round Lake Beach Saturday evening, police said.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 7:35 p.m. Saturday to the 1500 block of West Crystal Rock Court for a report of a rollover crash.
Fire crews arrived and found an orange 2006 Pontiac G6 that had reportedly rolled over and struck the apartment building on the corner of West Clear Water Circle and Long Lake Drive. The building and the car sustained heavy damage.
The girl and the man inside the vehicle had to be extricated by firefighters. Witnesses reported that paramedics were performing CPR on both of the victims before they were put into ambulances.
They were transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center with critical injuries and were later pronounced dead, Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper told Lake and McHenry County Scanner late Saturday evening.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to bring structural collapse technicians from numerous fire department to the scene.
Two of the residential units of the condominium building were damaged. The residents were not inside the units at the time of the crash, police said.
Witnesses told police that the Pontiac was driving eastbound at a high rate of speed at the time of the crash. Long Lake Drive is a 25 mph speed zone.
Autopsies have been scheduled for Monday on the man and girl, whose names are being withheld pending notification to their family members.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department is investigating the crash with the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
