A police officer and a 65-year-old woman were hospitalized after the woman smashed into the rear of a Fox Lake police car while it was on a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said that the crash happened around 1:55 p.m. on Rollins Road near Maple Avenue in Fox Lake.

A gray 2004 Hyundai sedan, driven by a 65-year-old Ingleside woman, was traveling westbound on Rollins Road at around 35-40 mph when she struck the rear of the squad car, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

The fully marked police car was conducting a traffic stop on another vehicle at the time of the crash and had its emergency lights activated. Witnesses reported the driver did not slow down before hitting the police car, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the Hyundai and the police officer were both injured. They were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
