A Georgia man died after police say he rented a gun from a gun store and then intentionally shot himself at their on-site gun range in Zion Sunday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 11:05 a.m. Sunday to 5 Star Firearms, 41666 North Sheridan Road in unincorporated Zion, for a report of a person shot.

A 49-year-old man from Riverdale, Georgia entered the facility, rented a gun and then proceeded to the on-site gun range, Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

“Video surveillance shows the man then shot himself, in what appears to be an intentional act,” Covelli said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and an autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday.

The incident remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
