A 32-year-old Wauconda man was killed after he crashed his Chevy Camaro into a traffic light pole in Round Lake Beach early Sunday morning, police said.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and the Round Lake Beach Police Department responded around 12:20 a.m. Sunday to Rollins Road and Hook Drive for a report of a single-vehicle crash.
Police arrived and found the 2010 Chevy Camaro with heavy front-end damage. The car was traveling eastbound on Rollins Road when it left the roadway, went onto the sidewalk and struck the pole head-on, police said.
The driver, who was unconscious and not breathing, was trapped inside the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. No one else was in the vehicle.
The Round Lake Beach Police Department said that the man was a 32-year-old from Wauconda but withheld his name pending family notification. An autopsy has been scheduled for Tuesday by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT) was called to investigate the crash and Rollins Road was shutdown in both directions for several hours.
