An 89-year-old Beach Park woman died at the hospital after her minivan was struck by a box truck in unincorporated Zion Monday afternoon, police said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:15 p.m. Monday to Russell Road and Kenosha Road in unincorporated Zion for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a box truck and a minivan involved in the crash. The driver of the minivan, an 89-year-old Beach Park woman, was trapped and firefighters had to extricate her.

Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a 1997 Ford Box Truck, driven by a 69-year-old Winthrop Harbor man, was traveling eastbound on Russell Road.

The 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan was traveling northbound on Kenosha Road, which is controlled by a stop sign for northbound and southbound traffic at the intersection.

“As the truck was traveling eastbound through the intersection, the driver of the Dodge proceeded northbound. The front of the truck struck the driver’s side of the Dodge,” Covelli said.

There is no traffic control device for eastbound and westbound Russell Road where the truck was travelling along, police added.

The driver of the minivan was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with life-threatening injuries and later died. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

An autopsy has been scheduled by the Lake County Coroner’s Office on the woman, whose name is being withheld pending the autopsy and notification to family.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.
