A 53-year-old woman struck by a hit-and-run driver, who is now in police custody, in the parking lot of a Deerfield business Friday morning has died at the hospital, police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office said.

The Deerfield Police Department and Deerfield-Bannockburn Fire Department responded around 11:37 a.m. Friday to a parking lot at 825 Waukegan Road for a report of a person struck by a vehicle.

The Deerfield Police Department said that officers arrived and found a 53-year-old woman lying in the parking lot, which is near the Deerfield Bakery. Police performed rescue efforts on the victim before paramedics arrived and transported the woman to Highland Park Hospital.

Lake County Coroner Dr. Howard Cooper confirmed that the woman died at the hospital a short time later. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday on the woman, whose identity is being withheld pending notification to her family.

Police said the vehicle that struck the woman fled the scene. A joint investigation by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Deerfield Police Department was launched due to the severity of the crash.

A source told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that the suspect vehicle, a black minivan with front-end damage, was stopped by police near Deerfield High School.

Police confirmed that the 68-year-old man driving the vehicle was taken into custody and is being cooperative with the investigation. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office will review possible charges once the investigation is complete.
