A driver was taken into custody after he crashed his car into a tree near Antioch and fled the scene, leaving behind his seriously injured passenger Friday evening, police said.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Antioch Fire Department responded around 9:40 p.m. Friday to the 27900 block of West Wilmot Road in unincorporated Antioch for a single-vehicle crash.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found the passenger of the vehicle, a 38-year-old Silver Lake, Wisconsin woman, lying in the roadway, Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.
She was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 29-year-old Silver Lake, Wisconsin man, fled the scene before police arrived, Covelli said.
Investigators believe the 2003 Kia Sorento was traveling westbound on Wilmot Road approaching the Wisconsin border when the driver ‘failed to properly negotiate a curve’ in the roadway, Covelli said.
The vehicle drove off the road and struck a tree. Police believe the driver pulled his female passenger out of the car and then fled from the scene.
Authorities later located the driver hiding in a garage in the 42300 block of Willow Street in unincorporated Antioch. Covelli said that it is believed the man entered the garage at random to try and hide.
He was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries from the crash and will likely be charged once the investigation concludes, Covelli said.
