A 42-year-old Lake Villa man was killed and an Ingleside man was critically injured after three vehicles, including a crane and a work van, collided near Richmond Monday morning, officials said.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and Richmond Township Fire Protection District responded around 7:51 a.m. Monday to Route 173 and Keystone Road in unincorporated Richmond for a three-vehicle crash with injuries.

The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office said that a 2007 Terex Crane, driven by a 37-year-old Hebron man, was traveling eastbound on Route 173 approaching Keystone Road.

A 2017 Nissan NV Cargo Van, driven by a 42-year-old Lake Villa man, was traveling northbound on Keystone Road approaching Route 173 and had a stop sign.

“For unknown reasons, the Nissan failed to yield to traffic and pulled out onto Route 173,” sheriff’s officials said.

The Terex Crane struck the Nissan, causing both vehicles to move into the westbound lane of traffic on Route 173, where they struck a 2017 Jeep Wrangler, driven by a 19-year-old Richmond woman, who was waiting to turn south onto Keystone Road.

The 28-year-old Ingleside man, who was the passenger in the Nissan van, was extricated from the vehicle and flown by Flight For Life to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he remains in critical condition. The 42-year-old driving the Nissan van was pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers of the Terex Crane and Jeep were not injured. Route 173 and Keystone Road was closed for seven hours Monday.

The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
