A 63-year-old Deerfield man is in critical condition after he drove off the road and struck several trees in Long Grove Sunday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Long Grove Fire Protection District responded around 9:10 a.m. to Route 22 and Miranda Lane in Long Grove for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.

A 63-year-old Deerfield man, driving a 2007 Toyota Sienna, was found unresponsive in his vehicle when police arrived. Sheriff’s deputies initiated life-saving efforts on the man until paramedics arrived.

Lake County Sheriff Sgt. Christopher Covelli said that a preliminary investigation shows the Toyota was traveling eastbound on Route 22 at a slow rate of speed. For an unknown reason, the driver veered across the westbound lanes into the ditch before striking several trees.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville where he remains in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit, who is working to determine if the crash could have been caused by a medical emergency, Covelli said.
