The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Forest Preserve Police and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 4:30 p.m. Monday to a trail in Grant Woods Forest Preserve off of Rollins Road in Ingleside.

A preliminary investigation shows that a mother was walking with her young child on the path when she was attacked with some type of edged weapon, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli.

The mother and her child were able to escape and a bystander called 911. The offender, described as a female black, was last seen fleeing the area on foot, Covelli said, adding that the attack appears to be random.
