Marquette Owens, 60, of Ingleside.

A 60-year-old woman has been charged in connection with the seemingly random stabbing of a mother who was walking with her young child in Grant Woods Forest Preserve.

Marquette Owens, 60, of Ingleside, was charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery, court records show.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Forest Preserve Police and Fox Lake Fire Protection District responded around 4:30 p.m. Monday to a trail in Grant Woods Forest Preserve off of Rollins Road east of Wilson Road in Ingleside.

Lake County Forest Preserves Police Commander Jim Siefken said that a mother was walking with her young child, who is under the age of 10, when she was allegedly attacked by Owens.

The mother was stabbed with some type of edged weapon, according to Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli. The mother and her child were able to escape and a bystander called 911.

The mother sustained ‘significant stab wounds’ and paramedics transported her to Advocate Condell Medical Center with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, Covelli said, adding that the child was uninjured.

Siefken said that Owens fled on foot but was later arrested. She was transported to the Lake County Jail where her bond was set at $750,000 Tuesday morning.

“Our officers and detectives did an excellent job in investigating the case that subsequently led to charging Owens,” Siefken said. “Safety within the Lake County Forest Preserves is our number one priority,” he added.
