The Buffalo Grove police chief said that investigators have high-quality surveillance video that shows a gunman shooting a husband and wife multiple times each as they exited their vehicle at their condo complex.
The Buffalo Grove Police Department and Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded around 11:30 p.m. Sunday to Cambridge on the Lake, 150 Lake Boulevard. A resident called 911 and reported they found two people unresponsive near a vehicle with blood on the ground.
At a press conference Monday morning, Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens said that officers arrived and found a 69-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman who had been shot in the underground parking garage.
Both were unable to be revived after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene around 11:55 p.m.
Casstevens said that the victims were husband and wife and lived at the condominium complex.
“Surveillance video from the facility showed the two victims arriving in the parking garage and exiting their vehicle at approximately 8:15 p.m. A male suspect then approached the two victims on foot and shot each of them multiple times. The suspect then exited the parking garage on foot,” Casstevens said.
Police believe the shooter is a male white, 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall, possibly in his 60s, grey hair, wearing dark clothing that consisted of a dark jacket and a dark baseball-style hat.
“While the identity of the suspect is not known at this time, we are confident we will be able to identify him. We believe the victims in this case were specifically targeted and we do not believe there is further danger to other residents,” Casstevens said.
The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is assisting the Buffalo Grove Police Department in the investigation.
“Our condolences go out to the victim and their families in this tragic event,” Casstevens said.
Fire department sonar technicians searched the pond near the condominium building to check for the weapon used in the incident, Casstevens said.
Casstevens would not specify why investigators believe the couple was targeted but said that the shooter and the couple engaged in a brief conversation prior to the shooting.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office responded and the names of the victims are not being released pending notification to their next-of-kin, police said.
The parking garage is a secure area that only residents have access to and there was no sign of forced entry to it, Casstevens said, adding that the suspect entered the garage on foot behind the couple’s vehicle as it pulled in.
Further information and possibly surveillance photos may be released Monday afternoon, police said.
