One person was transported to the hospital after a gunman opened fire on a group of people in an alley Wednesday evening in Zion, police said.

The Zion Police Department responded around 9:20 p.m. to the 1700 block of Joppa Avenue for several 911 calls of shots fired.

Responding officers learned that several subjects were in the alley near the address when they were approached by a lone subject who began firing at the group, police said.

“One of the subjects being fired at fled the scene in a vehicle, eventually crashing and fleeing on foot,” the Zion Police Department said in a statement.

The vehicle was located crashed in a yard in the 1800 block of Joppa Avenue. One person sustained a possible gunshot wound and was transported to an area hospital where they later refused any medical treatment, police said.

Witnesses told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that several cars in the area had bullet holes in them from the shooting.
