Alejandro Gonzalez-Maldonado, 49, of Hainesville, was arrested after sideswiping a Round Lake Park squad car Wednesday, police said.

A Hainesville man, who was allegedly under the influence and had a child in his car, was arrested after he sideswiped a police car and another vehicle in Round Lake Park Wednesday evening, police said.

Alejandro Gonzalez-Maldonado, 49, of the 300 block of Pineview Drive in Hainesville, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and child endangerment. He was cited for a Scott’s Law violation, failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash, improper lane usage and expired registration.

A Round Lake Park police officer pulled over a 1993 Dodge pickup truck southbound on Hainesville Road north of Oak Avenue around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The squad car’s emergency lights had been activated when a 2002 Ford SUV, driven by Gonzalez-Maldonado, sideswiped the driver side of the squad car and the pickup truck as the officer was talking to the driver of the pickup truck.

“Fortunately, the police officer was speaking to the driver of the Dodge from the Dodge’s front passenger side window, versus the driver’s window,” Lake County Sheriff Spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli said.

“Had the police officer been speaking to the driver of the Dodge at the driver’s side of the vehicle, the officer would have been struck and likely seriously injured,” Covelli said.

Sheriff’s deputies determined Gonzalez-Maldonado, who had a child under the age of 10 in the car with him, was under the influence of alcohol. He was released from the Lake County Jail after posting 10 percent of his $3,000 bond.

Gonzalez-Maldonado is scheduled to appear in court on December 18.
