A teenage girl is in critical condition after being struck by an SUV on Belvidere Road in Waukegan Thursday morning, police said.

The Waukegan Fire Department and Waukegan Police Department responded around 6:35 a.m. Thursday to Belvidere Road and Keller Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car.

Police officers arrived and found the girl, whose age has not released, seriously injured after being struck by a mid-size Jeep SUV.

Paramedics transported the girl by ambulance to an area hospital where she was listed in critical condition, according to Waukegan Fire Department Spokesman Steve Lenzi.

The Waukegan Police Department’s Traffic Division responded to the scene to conduct the accident investigation. Belvidere Road between Lewis Avenue and Keller Avenue was closed off for around three hours until 9:45 a.m.

Waukegan Police Department Commander Joe Florip said that the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and is being cooperative with investigators.

A witness told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that she and the car in front of her swerved out of the way immediately following the collision in order to avoid running over the girl who was injured in the street.

The crash remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
