Anatoliy Ermak, the suspect wanted for murdering a married couple in Buffalo Grove, is in critical condition after he shot himself during a standoff with police in Edina, Minnesota Friday evening, authorities confirmed.
Police officers responded around 8 p.m. Friday to the 6000 block of Vernon Avenue in Edina, Minnesota, after local residents spotted Ermak’s vehicle, Buffalo Grove Deputy Police Chief Michael Szos said.
They found Ermak sitting inside of his rented white Nissan Versa hatchback outside of a residential apartment complex. A negotiator attempted to communicate with the man for over 90 minutes before Ermak shot himself, Szos said.
The man was transported by paramedics to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition. Ermak is wanted for killing his ex-wife and her husband last weekend in Buffalo Grove.
Buffalo Grove Police Chief Steven Casstevens said Monday afternoon that numerous agencies, including local, state and federal authorities, had been searching for Ermak, whose last known residence was in Minnesota.
Szos said that Ermak rented the white Nissan Versa hatchback out of Minnesota, where he was last known to be residing, several days before the murders.
69-year-old Roman Frid and 55-year-old Nataliya Ermak had been found around 11:30 p.m. November 17 shot to death in the underground parking garage of their condominium complex at 150 Lake Boulevard in Buffalo Grove.
Casstevens said that Anatoliy Ermak and Nataliya Ermak filed for divorced several years ago and the woman then married Roman Frid.
“Surveillance video from the facility showed the two victims arriving in the parking garage and exiting their vehicle at approximately 8:15 p.m. A male suspect then approached the two victims on foot and shot each of them multiple times. The suspect then exited the parking garage on foot,” Casstevens said.
“We believe the victims in this case were specifically targeted and we do not believe there is further danger to other residents,” Casstevens said.
Casstevens said that Anatoliy Ermak entered the garage on foot behind the couple’s vehicle as it pulled in. The three of them engaged in a ‘brief conversation’ before police say Anatoliy Ermak shot the two victims multiple times before fleeing.
